Those purposes include lumber, paper, plywood and simply other. Very little of it makes it to the woodturners and fine woodworkers of the world.

Even with that said, how we use our small percentage makes a difference in how we view and live with the world. Much of the hardwood that gets burned every year is highly figured. If we encourage our local wood cutters to be on the lookout for such wood, we can rescue it from the fires and use it for the lathe. Still more of our urban wood that is cleared from parks and people's yards finds its way into landfills. Saving it for the lathe rescues that wood and negates the need for more expensive wood cut purposely for the woodworker.

In addition, there is the satisfaction that comes from using local materials combined with the good citizenship that does not need the increasing use of fossil fuels to move that wood from all over the world. Almost all areas have local woods with great beauty. Thinking that more beautiful woods must come from exotic places is just another way of saying that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Woodturners have a great opportunity to not only use local woods, but also to educate the public as the beauty of local woods as they see what can be done with them. A local use can in this case have global implications.
