What Types of CNC Machining Process?

The CNC machining process removes excess material from a product in order to shape, size, and process it. In contrast to other manufacturing methods, machining can remove large amounts of material from hard materials without damaging them, and it can also increase production and reduce labor costs.

CNC TURNING

CNC turning, also known as rotary machining, is one of the basic types of CNC machining processes. With CNC turning lathe, a single-point cutting tool is used to remove material from a rotating workpiece. It is commonly used to cut metal, but can also be used to cut wood, plastic, and stone.

This type of machining process uses a lathe to rotate the workpiece while the cutting tool is angled to remove material along its diameter. The CNC turning machine can be a manual lathe or an automated machine with computer numerical control (CNC).

A turning tool is typically made from high-speed steel, but carbide has become more popular due to its wear resistance and durability. Carbide tools are generally brazed, which means they are hardened by heating them to a higher temperature than other cutting tools.

CNC turning lathes are attached to fixed tools (such as boring bars) that enable the machinist to create a variety of geometric forms in the workpiece while turning. This process is commonly used to create tubular components.

As a result of the machining technique and the accuracy of the lathe, these parts can often be very precise in diameter and depth. The CNC turning lathe can be traversed along 1, 2, or 3 axis of motion in order to produce a wide range of diameters and depths, which helps to achieve these precisions.

Aside from machining cylindrical parts, CNC turning center can also create shapes such as steps, tapers, and chamfers. These features can be achieved by making several passes at a small radial depth of cut and involve several topological processes.

In the same way as other machining processes, CNC turning is expensive, especially if the part is done on a lathe. A lathe requires a lot of maintenance and is expensive to run. The repetitive nature of machining can result in the cutting tool wearing out quickly, resulting in higher repair costs. Additionally, turning can produce a great deal of scrap metal.

CNC MILLING

CNC milling is a type of CNC machining process in which the workpiece is fixed and a rotating cutting tool presses against it, removing material. The tool is typically a milling cutter that has multiple cutting edges. This method of machining is most often used for forming surfaces such as planes, grooves, and various shaped parts.
